Late at night, and looking bedraggled and tired, the mathematician turned up at the carpenter’s door. The carpenter fed him and gave him a bed for the night but the following morning he asked what a mathematician was doing wandering the world like a tramp.
“I am searching for infinity” the mathematician replied. “It has eluded me in the university, and in the laboratory, and now I have vowed to walk the world until I find it.”
The carpenter was suddenly gripped by a strong impulse. “Wait here!” he said, and went into his workshop and returned with a chair unlike any he had ever made. “I’ve been waiting for the right person to give this to, and I think it might just be yours…”
